Obesity Fat People Lack Self-Control Essay - 1032 Words

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States more than one-third of adults and one-sixth of children are obese. Over the next twenty years, these numbers will more than double. By the year 2020, obesity will be considered a normal thing, and a healthy weight will be the exception. Who is to blame for the increasing obese population? Some say fast food restaurants that are on every block in the city. Others say it is the obese people themselves because they do not know how to control themselves. Many major health conditions come with obesity and it is costing the government millions in healthcare to pay for others lack of self control. Fast food contains high amounts of salt, sugar, fat, and†¦show more content†¦The quality of the food is far more important than the amount one consumes. A report was published in June 23, 2011 in the New England Journal of Medicine stating â€Å"People gained weight when eating fast food, potato chips, and sweetened beverages, unprocessed and processed red meats. People lost weight when they ate vegetables, whole grains, fruits, nut and yogurt.† The difference between fast food meals and home cooked meals is the amount of calories and fat found in each. The recommended amount of daily intake can be found in one fast food meal for one sitting. Although, many people realize the amount of calories and fat that are found at fast food restaurants and yet Americans still choose to eat at them. Fast Food restaurants are fast and cheap. A restaurant can be found on almost every street corner and is an easy grab and go place when one is in a rush. McDonald’s for instance has a dollar menu. A person can spend less than five dollars and have a meal to eat. What one may not realize is the high amount of fats they are eating. This type of food can also be eaten in the car and picked up at the very convenient drive- thru window. Children also love the idea of fast food because it is finger food and some meals may even include a toy . Another reason people may be eating out more is to the increasing divorce rate in the United States.
