What Is the (Alfred Russel) Wallace Line

Alfred Russel Wallace may not be well known outside the scientific community, but his contributions to the theory of evolution were invaluable to Charles Darwin. In fact, Wallace and Darwin collaborated on the idea of natural selection and presented their findings jointly to the Linnean Society in London. However, Wallace has become just a footnote in history due to Darwins publishing his book On the Origin of Species before Wallace could publish his own work. Even though Darwins findings used data that Wallace contributed, Wallace still did not get the sort of recognition and glory that his colleague Charles Darwin enjoyed. There are, however, some great contributions Wallace does get credit for from his journeys as a naturalist. Perhaps his best-known finding was discovered with data he gathered on a trip through the Indonesian islands and surrounding areas. By studying the flora and fauna in the area, Wallace was able to come up with a hypothesis that includes something called the Wallace Line. What Is the Wallace Line? The Wallace Line is an imaginary boundary that runs between Australia and the Asian islands and the mainland. This boundary marks the point where there is a difference in species on either side of the line. To the west of the line, for instance, all of the species are similar or derived from species that are found on the Asian mainland. To the east of the line, there are many species of Australian descent. Along the line is a mix of the two where many species are hybrids of the typical Asian species and the more isolated Australian species. The Wallace Line theory holds true for both plants and animals, but it is much more distinctive for the animal species than the plants. Understanding the Wallace Line There was a point in time on the Geologic Time Scale where Asia and Australia were joined together to make one giant landmass. During this period, species were free to move about on both continents and could easily remain one singular species as they mated and produced viable offspring. However, once continental drift and plate tectonics started to pull these lands apart, the large amount of water that separated them drove evolution in different directions for the species, making them unique to either continent after a long period of time had passed. This continued reproductive isolation has made the once closely related species disparate and distinguishable. Not only does this invisible line mark the different areas of animals and plants, but it also can be seen in the geological landforms in the area. Looking at the shape and size of the continental slope and continental shelf in the area, it seems that the animals observe the line by using these landmarks. Therefore, it is possible to predict which types of species you will find on either side of the continental slope and the continental shelf. The islands near the Wallace Line are also collectively called by a name to honor Alfred Russel Wallace: Wallacea. They also have a distinctive set of species that live on them. Even the birds, which are capable of migrating between the mainlands of Asia and Australia, seem to stay put and have thus diverged over long periods of time. It is not known if the differing landforms make the animals aware of the boundary, or if there is something else that keeps the species from traveling from one side of the Wallace Line to the other.

Throughout one’s life, a person will go through numerous changes, both physically and mentally. These continuous changes in life are a few of the steps to maturing, which also helps build a person’s identity. In the romantic poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, by Pearl Poet, the hero, Sir Gawain goes through a passage which develops his perspective on adulthood leading to his maturity. During this scene, Gawain takes on the Green Knights request by taking a blow to his head, which shows his courage to take on this game the Green Knight had demanded. It also displays that he is courageous because in this game, he then in return had to take the same blow by the Green Knight a year and one day later. Overall, Gawain displays his great heroism and courageousness by protecting his King just as a true knight should. It has a lot of furniture of different geometric shapes. Also the ceiling is triangular. This form of painting amuses me because of the multiple geometric shapes placed in one location. There are circles, squares, trapezoids, ovals, rectangles and triangles, They are placed next to each other in interesting patterns. The rectangles are with strangle and the triangles on the ceiling are all together. There are objects that have unknown geometric shape. Also there are objects with soft edges and hard edges. Some of the couches have rounded edges that are very pleasant to look at. The trapezoids and other parallelograms are hard-edged and catch the attention Of a viewer right away _ The hard-edged shapes are not pleasant but, in fact they are useful. The hard-edged shapes are used to balance out the soft- edged shapes in the painting so it is evenly mixed. This causes a beautiful blend of shapes. The lines on this painting are very diverse. There are sharp, thick, jagged, curved, choppy, smooth, vertical, straight and diagonal lines on this painting. The ceiling in this painting is filled jagged, thin and sharp. This is mixed together to help make a very interesting ceiling. The ground itself in the painting is filled with thin choppy fuzzy sharp lines in turn making the ground look like a wooden floor. The objects are very different in this painting. Some have sharp lines, like the tables and others have smooth line like the couch near to the center of the iron. These lines cause the shapes to have the full affect of their beauty to appear _ The textures of this painting are also very diverse, going from rough to cottony. The smooth and cottony textures are used for a couch and sofa to make them look relaxing. Hard and rough texture is dominant in the bottom right side Of the painting. The shapes with this dark texture make an affect of not wanting to look in that direction. The colors in this painting are the most varied have ever seen. He combined light with shapes and color and formed an ultimate image. This painting with only two faults of no depth and 3 dimensional perspective is otherwise one of the best things have ever seen.
